About the Ch. DBA™ designation
The Chartered Doctor of Business Administration (Ch. DBA™) is a doctoral-level credential from the Chartered Institute of Management Specialists (CIMS) that recognises individuals with outstanding expertise, leadership and contribution to the field of business administration. Entry requirements
To be considered for the Ch. DBA™ designation, applicants are expected to meet the following criteria:
Academic and professional qualifications
A recognised PhD, DBA, Level 8 diploma, or relevant master's degree from an accredited institution or from CIMS' own doctoral pathway.
Professional experience
15 or more years of senior leadership, consulting, or academic experience.
Continuous professional development
Evidence of ongoing learning through courses, certifications or workshops, together with participation in industry events or thought-leadership activities.
Ethical and professional standards
Adherence to a professional code of ethics and a clean record free of professional or academic misconduct.
Portfolio submission
A research portfolio or other evidence of thought leadership and demonstrable business impact.
Peer and professional review
Letters of recommendation from credible professionals or academic mentors, plus evaluation by a peer review panel.
Membership requirements
Active membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Specialists and participation in institute activities and knowledge-sharing forums.
Mode of assessment
Candidates complete a leadership scenario response, demonstrating problem-solving, decision-making and alignment with business objectives:
- Describe a real leadership challenge faced — for example a team conflict, a change-management initiative, or an ethical issue — and identify its root cause and the stakeholders affected.
- Set out the decision-making process followed, including information gathered, stakeholders consulted, and alternatives weighed before a course of action was chosen.
- Explain how the decision was communicated and implemented, and the key actions taken to resolve the situation.
- Present the outcomes achieved and show how the resolution supported wider business objectives such as growth, efficiency or employee engagement, submitted as a structured written or presented response.
